  • The Joy Luck Club

My most favorite book by Amy Tan, an all time read. I read the The Joy Luck Club in school for a bok report in 8th grade. I got so into the book that I forgot all about the book report and almost got a F. After I told my teacher how much I loved the book she told me that it was made into a movie. As soon as I got home I asked my father can he buy me the Joy Luck Club and he went into the living room and gave my a VHS that said "The Joy Luck Club". I was shocked that this movie was in my home and I had no clue. Ever since then I fell in love with the movie. But the book explains so much than the movie ever could. Even now I still watch the movie and read the book. If you havn't already read the book, I suggest that you read it before watching the movie. By reading and watching the joy luck club, it made me even more thankful for having a mother that wanted nothing but the best for me.

    About the book:

"Four Chinese American immigrant families who start a club known as "the Joy Luck Club," playing the Chinese game of Mahjong for money while feasting on a variety of foods. There are four parts divided into four sections to create sixteen chapters, and each woman, both mothers and daughters, (with the exception of one mother, Suyuan Woo, who dies before the novel opens) share stories about their lives in the form of vignettes"

The movie is nothing short of amazing. I reccomend EVERYONE should watch it!

Nice blog, friend. Seems very romantic and poetic in nature, this book you are interested in. Maybe I'll dig into it.

we JUST watched this movie in class.

    :)

it was weird, i didn't quite understand because there were so many characters.

but the characters were so complex.

like the lady who had the white husband who brought a whore into the house. and then she killed her kid.

this movie is great. pretty much a fave.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!! I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!! That was the first movie I've seen with positive Asian charactors. Whenever it ran on tv, I stopped the world to watch it. It's so inspiring for all girls.

The whole movie is on youtube also! When I found out, I sent a sappy thank you note to the uploader because it's hard to find that movie! I havent read the book though, but I want to. I'll see if I can get it for $10 after payday.

If I had to pick a favorite charactor, I would pick Rose. I'm alot like her. I would do things to please people & make friend/try to keep friends & overwork myself & once I hit rock bottom almost a year ago when I got so sick to the point I thought I was dying, I knew I neglected myself & changed a whole lot. It's not like I'm "mememe" now but I learned when to say no.

Truly a wonderful film inspired by Amy Tan's book. It has been released in DVD, so shouldn't be that difficult to find.

omg I love this movie. I had to watch this in high school for an english class. Then I watched it again in college. It was a sad movie. At first it was confusing because there were so many characters.

I am a big Amy Tan fan, but have mostly read her short stories.
I'm going to read Joy Luck Club now! Have you read The Bone Setter's Daughter? I strongly recommend it, if not.
